Summary: The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction implemented the project “Stop Violence against Women and Girls in Samburu, Marsabit and Isiolo Counties in Northern Kenya”. The aim was to address sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), specifically female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C), early forced marriage, beading for sexual exploitation, and other forms of domestic violence. The project sought to provide better prevention and response with regard to SGBV, specifically by increasing awareness about the issue, enhancing the prevention and protection capacities of law enforcement, and increasing survivors’ access to comprehensive services.

Main findings of the evaluation:

  • Nearly half of SGBV survivors interviewed reported accessing adequate multi-sectoral services, compared to a baseline value of 13 per cent.
  • Over 90 per cent of women interviewed knew what constitutes a violation of women’s rights, including FGM/C and child marriage, compared to a baseline percentage of 40 per cent.
  • Nearly three-quarters of women interviewed believed that laws and policies to prevent violence against women and girls were adequately enforced, compared to a baseline value of 11 per cent.
  • Community members became more aware of the harmful effects of SGBV and were more willing to change their behaviour and attitudes towards FGM/C, beading and child marriage.
  • A training manual was developed and used effectively to guide individuals to facilitate dialogue about SGBV in communities.
