Women for Afghan Women implemented a three-year project, “Prevention and Response to Gender-Based Violence in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Returnee Communities (PARGIRC)”, with the support of the UN Trust Fund. The project aimed to:

  • improve access of vulnerable populations to essential, safe and adequate multi-sectorial services; and
  • address gender-based violence in the context of the forced displacement and refugee returnee crisis in the provinces of Balkh, Faryab and Kunduz in Afghanistan.

The final evaluation found that the project raised awareness about gender-based violence and helped survivors to access legal assistance and psychotherapy.

Main findings of the evaluation:

  • Most of those who received life skills training created enterprises, and the net income of women and girls who participated in livelihood programmes increased by 25%.
  • The project helped vulnerable women and girls obtain essential humanitarian assistance by improving their knowledge of women's rights and giving them business skills.
  • All the families targeted by the project in the selected provinces learned where to go for help if they were at risk of gender-based violence.
  • 89% of the project's target women and girls said they were satisfied with the quality of information and their access to reintegration information from community-based groups and civil society organizations.
