In Mexico, the Instituto para las Mujeres en la Migración, A.C. (IMUMI) implemented the project “Contribution to the international protection of migrant women survivors of gender-based violence in Mexico” from 2019 to 2022 with the support of the UN Trust Fund. The project aimed to build a support strategy for migrant women and girls who had survived gender-based violence so they have greater access to international protection in Mexico. The final evaluation found that despite structural and operational challenges, the project’s activities were achieved and its objectives were covered effectively.

The Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales (CELS) implemented a four-year project, “The reform of hospital and legal practices to eradicate violence against women with mental disabilities isolated at the Dr. Alejandro Korn Psychiatric Hospital, Buenos Aires, Argentina”, with the support of the UN Trust Fund. The project aimed to improve the quality of life of women with psychosocial disabilities who use the hospital, and increase their chances of living free of violence within the hospital and in their communities. The final evaluation found that the project effectively covered its objectives and achieved its planned activities.

In the Murewa, Goromonzi and Kwekwe/Zibagwe districts of Zimbabwe, the Family AIDS Caring Trust (FACT) implemented a three-year project, “Voices from the Fringes: Sex Workers and Adolescent Girls and Young Women Action against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence”, supported by the UN Trust Fund under the Spotlight Initiative. This project aimed to promote women’s sexual and reproductive health rights and address sexual and gender-based violence by bringing the marginalized voices and concerns of female sex workers, adolescent girls and young women from the fringes to the fore in the interventions to end such violence. The final evaluation found that the project’s objectives were covered effectively and that the project surpassed its target of 18 solidarity groups for female sex workers, adolescent girls and young women.

Women’s Affairs Technical Committee implemented the three-year project “Gender Justice to End Violence against Women and Girls” across four governorates in the West Bank of the State of Palestine with the support of the UN Trust Fund from 2018 to 2021. The project aimed to address violence against women and girls by improving access to formal and informal justice systems for survivors of violence, focusing on refugee and internally displaced women and girls. The final evaluation found that key judicial actors as well as community-based women leaders and practitioners had gained enhanced capacity to detect and respond to cases of gender-based violence and provide referral services, and media advocacy campaigns increased the visibility of such violence and promoted the agency and rights of women and girls to access justice.

Refugee Consortium of Kenya implemented the three-year project “Towards Improved Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Among Urban Refugees Project” in Nairobi and Garissa counties, with the support of the UN Trust Fund, from 2018 to 2021. The programme primarily aimed to enhance community-based support for women and girl survivors of violence, particularly refugees and asylum seekers; improve reporting and conviction rates of gender-based violence cases; and strengthen the coping mechanisms and practical skillsets of survivors. A final evaluation revealed that the project substantially increased the knowledge and awareness of gender-based violence among women and girl survivors, as well as key judicial, medical, official and religious actors, which in turn improved survivors’ perception of self-worth, their confidence in institutional mechanisms, and their ability to seek and access support.

In Morocco, Association Ennakhil implemented the three-year project “Combating gender-based violence in schools through the promotion of positive masculinity in Marrakech Safi region” in 2018-2021 with the support of the UN Trust Fund. The project worked with boys, girls, community members and media personnel to promote positive masculinity and improve attitudes and behaviours related to gender equality, to prevent gender-based violence in schools. The final evaluation revealed that the project successfully contributed to a positive shift in attitudes towards gender equality among school students and key communications, legal, medical and government actors.

In Kenya, the Centre for Rights, Education and Awareness and its partner Kenya Women Parliamentary Association implemented the “Wajibika project” for three and a half years from September 2018 with the support of the UN Trust Fund. The project aimed to better protect women and girls against gender-based violence through implementation of effective national legislation, policies, accountability structures and national action plans. The final evaluation found that, despite the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was successfully implemented. 

Al Shehab Institution for Comprehensive Development implemented the three-year project “Community-based intervention to alleviate the different forms of violence against women and women's vulnerability to HIV ‘Scale-up phase’” in Egypt’s capital Cairo between 2019 and 2022 with the support of the UN Trust Fund. This twice-funded project aimed to address women’s vulnerability to violence and HIV. The final evaluation found that the project’s objectives were covered effectively and its activities were achieved. 

In Myanmar, the Asia Pacific Network of Sex Workers working with Aye Myanmar Association implemented a three-year project “Community-based intervention to combat violence against sex workers” with the support of the UN Trust Fund. The project aimed to prevent violence against sex workers through improved services and community sensitization. The final evaluation found that the project was successful and that all targets were exceeded.

Peruvian Women's Centre Flora Tristán implemented the project “Indigenous women ‘My city, my space’: local answers to violence and discrimination” with support from the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women for three years. The project aimed to reduce the risk of violence and racial/ethnic discrimination in public spaces for indigenous Amazonian women and girls in Satipo province. The final evaluation found that the project surpassed its goals.

The UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women funded Trocaire’s initiative “Preventing and Responding to Violence Against Women and Girls in Nakuru and Nairobi Counties” in Kenya for three -years. The objective was to reduce violence, abuse and discrimination against adolescent girls and young women, as well as stigmatization of these women and girls, in eight informal settlements. The final evaluation found that the project’s strategy was highly relevant and successfully implemented.

The UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women supported the three-year “Drivers of Change” project implemented by Shirkat Gah-Women's Resource Centre. The project aimed to shift attitudes at the community level and increase women’s economic empowerment. The final evaluation found that changes at the individual level, especially among women and girls, improved prevention of and response to violence against women and girls.

The UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women funded “Addressing Violence Against Syrian Refugee Women in the Kurdistan Region of Northern Iraq”, a project implemented by Women for Women International . The project aimed to support women affected by conflict, including Syrian refugees, members of the host community, and internally displaced populations in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah. The evaluation found that the project was effective and improved the lives of the intended beneficiaries.

The project “Improving the Well-being of SGBV Survivors Among Syrian Refugees and Vulnerable Jordanian Women” was implemented by the Arab Women Organization of Jordan (AWO) between April 2017 and March 2019, supported by a grant from the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. The initiative aimed to enhance the response to sexual and gender-based violence in two of Jordan’s regions, Irbid and Mafraq, by improving social protection and prevention mechanisms. The final project evaluation found that it was highly effective and reached over seven times the target number of beneficiaries.

The UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women provided funding to Pragya’s initiative “Comprehensive Primary Prevention Programme Addressing Violence against Ethnic Minority Women in India”. Implemented in five states, the project tackled violence against tribal women in broad areas – legal and political; youth education; prevention mechanisms; and support services. The evaluation concluded that the project significantly contributed to positive change in the lives of women in the targeted communities, and that knowledge generation will help sustain the progress made.

The project “Transforming communities to end sexual and gender-based violence” was implemented by the Family Support Centre in Solomon Islands with support from the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. The final evaluation found the project had a notable impact in the provinces in relation to advocacy, awareness and reporting of sexual and gender-based violence, but that there was still room to strengthen understanding of gender inequalities in communities.

The Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand implemented the project “The Empowerment and Capacity Building of Lesbian and Transgender Women to Mitigate Violence, Stigma and Discrimination based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity” with funding from the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. The final evaluation concluded that the project had positively influenced the government and increased the confidence and self-esteem of project participants.

The project “Give Payment Not Abuse: Protecting Informal Women Traders in Dar es Salaam from Violence against Women”, implemented by Equality for Growth Limited, was funded by the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women from January 2015 to December 2017. The final evaluation found that the project contributed to a better trading environment for female market traders.

The project “Improvement of Conditions for Access to a Life Free of Gender Violence for Women in El Salvador”, implemented by the Asamblea de Cooperación por la Paz, was funded by the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women from January 2015 to December 2017. The final evaluation concluded that the project increased the capacities of women and youth related to local civil services, enabling their participation in local decision-making.

The project “Community-based Intervention to Alleviate the Different Forms of Violence against Women and Women's Vulnerability to HIV”, implemented by Al Shehab Institution for Comprehensive Development, was funded from January 2015 to December 2017 by the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women. The final evaluation found that the project raised women’s understanding of personal and structural violence, and improved their interaction with support services.
