The project “Protecting girls from violence and exploitation” in Mongolia was funded by the UN Trust Fund and implemented by Save the Children Japan, Mongolia Office (SCJM) from May 2021 to May 2024. Its goal was to better protect girls aged 12 to 18 in five low socio-economic districts of the capital Ulaanbaatar from increased risks of gender-based violence (GBV) and exploitation, through district health, protection and education services.
The project aimed to strengthen inter-sectoral links in preventing GBV, including by:
- involving educational institutions;
- supporting children's empowerment and participation in GBV prevention;
- improving data collection of information on GBV; and
- introducing a trauma-informed, survivor-centred approach.
The final evaluation found that the inter-sectoral approach was important for the project’s overall success in reaching its objectives.
Main findings of the evaluation:
- Overall, the project reached its goal of improving the quality of prevention and response services provided to girls through an inter-sectoral approach.
- During the project period, the [assessed?] quality of the prevention services provided increased significantly from 43% to 86%, and the quality of the response services provided to girl survivors of sexual abuse and exploitation increased from 20% to 76%.
- The targeted service providers reported improvements in overall coordination of prevention and response services.
- Through close collaboration with school administrations and effective school-based activities, the capacity of the beneficiary schools to address GBV was strengthened.
