Between January 2020 and December 2022, the Institute for Young Women’s Development implemented the UN Trust Fund-supported project “What Women Want – Building Grassroots Voices against Gender-Based Violence in Zimbabwe”. Focusing on Mashonaland (Central and East) and Manicaland, the project aimed to:

  • help women to build a strong and vibrant movement against violence against women and girls (VAW/G) to enable all women to have a voice and collectively challenge structural violence and manifestations of VAW/G; and
  • strengthen women’s capacities and alliances to influence social norms and values on VAW/G for improved safety from intimate partner and non-partner sexual and economic violence, and better control of and access to economic resources.

Main findings of the evaluation:

  • The project successfully influenced policy and legislative change at national and sub-national levels by amplifying women’s voices in forums where duty-bearers could be held accountable.
  • The project increased knowledge among beneficiaries of what constitutes VAW/G, helped reduce the number of cases of VAW/G left unattended by officials, and created a strong feminist movement that went on to influence reforms of the way community structures manage issues relating to VAW/G.
  • The project established a network of safe spaces in urban and rural communities to allow young women sex workers and lesbian, bisexual, transgenderl and intersex individuals to access information and seek support on VAW/G.
