Centro de Estudios de la Mujer - Honduras (CEM-H), supported by the UN Trust Fund, implemented the project "Networks of Women and Youth Promoting Communities Free of Violence Against Women and Girls" between January 2020 and June 2023. The project aimed to respond to institutional and organizational capacity gaps in local contexts that impede collective action to address and prevent violence against women and girls (VAW/G) and femicides.
Its focus was to support women and young people at risk of violence in the departments (administrative regions) of Francisco Morazán, Intibucá and Valle and the city of Choluteca by providing greater access to training and information on women’s human rights. It also aimed to challenge ideas and beliefs that justify gender-based violence.
The final evaluation found that the project’s training strategies significantly changed beliefs that legitimize VAW/G, and that it forged strategic alliances to meet its goals.
Main findings of the evaluation:
- The different training strategies on women's human rights strengthened women’s groups and networks. The project also used art and theatre, and developed dialogue forums, meetings and conversations in neighbourhoods and communities, to explain and champion women’s rights.
- The project forged strategic alliances with civil society and human rights organizations as well as government officials, which strengthened political advocacy at the community and national levels.
- The development of innovative training for men and boys achieved significant changes in beliefs that justify and legitimize VAW/G.
