The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is an intergovernmental set of 17 sustainable development goals. For the first time, addressing violence against women and girls is an explicit goal of inclusive, sustainable development through a UN-facilitated process.

Goal 5 on Gender Equality articulates the goal of ending physical and sexual violence and harmful traditional practices committed against women and girls. It highlights that the issue impacts on outcomes across the development agenda, from decent work opportunities and economic growth to climate action and peace.
